Performance Improvements to a Centrifugal Pump
A small stainless steel centrifugal pump manufactured for the beverage industry achieved peak operating efficiency of 46%. The manufacturer required an improvement in performance without compromising the hygienic requirements of the design. IFS carried out an initial design assessment with reference to good practice pump design guidelines. This was followed by full CFD virtual simulation and analysis.
The results highlighted detailed aspects of the impeller design, housing and outlet design causing efficiency loss. Numerous recommendations were implemented by the manufacture that resulted in performance improvements. The CFD supported design offered a cost-effective means of isolating specific trouble areas requiring design modification.
