Analysis and Development of Cooling for an Electrical Power Cabinet

There is continually increasing demand for greater power delivery from smaller more compact distributor cabinets. Cooling of the cabinets is a critical design element in order to comply with the constraints outlined in the European regulations. Heat is removed from the conductors and control boxes by combined conduction and convection. Natural air convection causes the air to rise within the unit from inlets at the base to outlets at the top.

CFD analysis was used to assess the temperature driven air-flow. A baseline study was performed against which the effects of numerous modifications were compared. The normal build and test procedure extended over a 6 week period. CFD virtual analysis offered a rapid design assessment of numerous component configurations resulting in quantified improvements.
