Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis of an Airflow Heater for Aerospace Applications

Airplanes rely on heat exchangers and electric resistance heaters to maintain the pilot cabin and sensitive electronics in a specific temperature range. The objective of the project was to assess flow resistance and related pressure drop across the heaters, their thermal performance, and to advise design improvements. Also, a two-way coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis was performed for one of the models to demonstrate the technology. The project showed importance of using a two-way coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis to adequately resolve interaction between the heat transfer processes and structural deformations.
